The naval fuel storage facility has a history of leaks.
Pentagon Press Secretary Brigadier General Pat Ryder recently stated that the Pentagon has concluded that the closure of their underground fuel storage in Hawaii will not negatively impact military readiness. The Pentagon has notified Congress of the findings, allowing the Department of Defense to officially begin draining the 104 million gallons of fuel from the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility.
The Defense Department faced criticism in November 2021 when the Red Hill storage tanks began to leak substantial amounts of fuel which contaminated Hawaii’s drinking water. The department took nearly two years to assess how the decommissioning of the facility would impact operations, concluding they could successfully function without it.
General Ryder said that the finalization of this readiness assessment “reflects the department’s ongoing commitment to defuel and ultimately close the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility, while upholding our responsibility to ensure the readiness of our armed forces.”
